In case you can read German: Have a look at the article of Dr. Joachim Reiber, chief editor of the magazine „Musikfreunde“ of the Society of Friends of Music in Vienna, concerning the presentation of von Einem’s “Philadelphia Symphony” in concerts of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of Franz Welser-Möst on November 22nd and 23rd in the Golden Hall of Musikverein Vienna.

Philadelphia Symphony

The piece was commissioned by Eugene Ormandy, then Music Director of the Philadelphia Orchestra, but in the end premiered 1961 in Vienna – where it met a partly shocked audience: a composition in c major!!!
